ABSTRACT

In 2006~2010, leaf spot symptoms, that is, small, yellow spots that turned into dark brown-to-black lesions surrounded by a yellow halo, were observed on Cymbidium spp. in Gongju, Taean, and Gapyeong in Korea. A Fusarium species was continuously isolated from symptomatic leaves; in pathogenicity testing, isolates caused leaf spot symptoms consisting of sunken, dark brown lesions similar to the original ones. The causal pathogen was identified as Fusarium subglutinans based on morphological and translation elongation factor 1-alpha sequence analyses. This is the first report of F. subglutinans as the cause of leaf spot disease in Cymbidium spp. in Korea.

ABSTRACT

In 2010, symptoms of leaf and stem rot were observed on potted plants (Peperomia quadrangularis) in a greenhouse in Yongin, Korea. The causative pathogen was identified as Myrothecium roridum based on morphological data, internal transcribed spacer sequence analysis, and pathogenicity test. To our knowledge, this is the first report of M. roridum causing leaf and stem rot disease on P. quadrangularis in Korea and elsewhere worldwide.

ABSTRACT

Sclerotium rot was found on Cymbidium orchids at Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea, in July, 2010. Symptoms occurred on low leaves, which turned yellowish, after which the entire plant wilted. Severely infected plants were blighted and eventually died. White mycelial mats and sclerotia appeared on pseudobulbs. Based on the mycological characteristics and pathogenicity, the causal fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report of new Sclerotium rot on Cymbidium spp. caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

ABSTRACT

We observed 22 cases of acute renal failure in children who were admitted to Severance Hospital from Jan. 1978 till Dec. 1980 and the results are as follows. The acute renal failure was the highest incidence between the age of 6 and 10 years (10 cases out of all), most of whom had acute glomerulonephritis and male was 3.4 times as high as in female. The causes of acute renal failure were renal origin(13 cases) and prerenal origin(8 cases) and in type of diseases the acute post streptococcal glomerulonephritis was the most frequent cause(8 cases). Average duration of oliguria or anuria was 3.4days(range 1~20 days), mean value of peak BUN level was 104mg/dl(range 54-184mg/dl) and it took average 5.6days(range 3~10days) to recover. Two patients died and those who died or discharge against advice were considered as died, mortality rate was 27%. It was remarkable that two neonates who were performed peritoneal dialysis on the 6 th day and the 7 th day after birth respecively were recovered from acute renal failure. Acute renal failure in children has more favorable outcome than in adult therefore early diagnosis and prompt treatment of conservative treatment and peritoneal dialysis should be performed.

ABSTRACT

Acute orbital cellulitis is most commonly caused by sinusitis. This complication is based on the anatomy of sinuses, orbit, and their venous connections. We have experienced a case of acute orbital cellulitis combined Subdural abscess due to maxillay sinusitis in a 14-year-old girl. Rapid Surgical drainage in the both upper lid and forehead and craniectomy resulted in complete recovery.

ABSTRACT

Authors have experienced 30 cases of traumatic hyphema for the recent 3 years. We treated all the patients by absolute bed rest. binocular patches, enzyme and osmotherapy, and in some cases, anterior chamber irrigation was performed. The following conclusions were obtained; 1) It took 2~3 1/2 days to be absorbed in the cases of hyphema less than one-quarter volume of anterior chamber. 2) It took 4-16 days in the cases of total hyphema. 3) In most cases of hyphema more than three-quarters volume of anterior chamber, they were associated with other ocular injuries and also shawed poar visual prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Craniofacial dysostosis, a well defined. rare syndrome first described by Crouzon in 1912, characteristically shows frontal bosses, prognathism, exophthalmos, exotropia, optic nerveatrophy and maxillary hypoplasia. Three cases of familial occurrence are presented, and according to their history, 11 of 13 members in 5 generations of their family are suspected to have been afflicted. A brief review of related literature is described.

ABSTRACT

Author reviewed the patients with temperature over 38.5 degress C for longer than two weeks and of undetermined etiology who were admitted and treated in Yonsei Medical Center during the period from Jan. 1974 to Aug. 1978. There have been 120 cases of prolonged fever in that period. The following results were obtained; 1. The children who were admitted with prolonged fever occupied 1.3% of total in-patients at the same period. 2. 16 cases were less than 1 year of age at admission and 64 were 1 to 6 years. So 2/3 of total cases were less than 6 years of age. The ratio of Male to Female was 1.6:1. 3. There Was no apparent difference in seasonal incidence. But from May to September slightly increased number was noted. 4. In 58 cases(48.3%), the fever persisted 2 to 3 weeks before admission and 27 cases lasted longer than a month. . Three patterns of fever were observed; intermittent type 75 cases(62.5%), daily spiking 32(26.7%) and constant 13(10.8%) 5. The final diagnoses as a cause of fever were as follows. Infections accounted for 81 cases(67.5%), malignancy 17(14.2%), collagen diseases 7(5.8%) and miscellaneous cause 1(0.8%). 14 cases(11.7%) remained undiagnosed at the cenclusion of their hospitalization. . Certain relationships between diagnosis and age were noted. Infection was the most common etiology in all age groups but 72.5% of these children were less than 6 years old. 71.4% of collagen diseases were older than 6 years. Malignancy had no age predilection. 6. Over 80% of all cases the diagnosis were made within a week and the fever disappeared in a week in 70% So most of them(75%) discharged within 2 weeks after admission. 7. Careful history suggested the final diagnosis in 84 cases(70%) and repeated physical examinations were helpful in 70 cases(58.3%) Abnormal findings in routine chest P-A were present in 47.5% Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was significantly increased in 26/34 cases(76.5%). 47 cases(39.2%) were anemic for age and all children with malignancy were anemic. Lumbar puncture, bone marrow aspiration, tissue biopsy and explo. Laparotomy were performed only in suspected cases. 8. Outcome on discharge were as follows; 90 cases(75.0%) were much improved, 21(17.5%) discharged without improvement and 9 cases(7.5%) expired.

ABSTRACT

The nevus of Ota is a distinctive, mesodermal pigmentation of the facial skin commonly combined with pigmentation of the eye, usually congenital but capable of benign progression. It is usually unilateral, but in the 1st of these 2 cases, pigmentation of the facial skin and the eye was bilateral and associated with pigmentation of the left shoulder and the anterior cervical area(nevus of Ita). In the 2nd of these 2 cases, pigmentation of the eye and the shoulder was bilateral. Pigmentation of the eye accompanies that of sclera in every case, that of conjunctiva, iris and choroid in some case. It accompanies that of optic disc rarely, but in the 1st of these 2 cases, the pigmentation of optic disc was found in both eyes, in the 2nd, in the right eye. We have experienced the above-mentioned 2 cases of nevus of Ota associated with nevus of Ito which accompanied the pigmentation of optic disc, that are rare. We briefly reviewed the literature relating to nevus of Ota and Ito.

ABSTRACT

Effect of Ouabain administration on aqueous humor dynamics were studied in albino rabbits. Intravenous injection of 0.1 mg/kg of ouabain in 10 rabbits produced significant reduction of intraocular pressure. The highest lowering of intraocular pressure occurred 70 minutes after the injection, its magnitude being 35.54% of the original pressure. The intraocular pressure returned to its original pressure 117.0 minutes after the injection. Perilimbal suction cup studies revealed 26.92 % reduction in aqueous flow. Intravitreal injection of O.1 micro gram of ouabain dissolved in 0.02 ml performed in 5 rabbits' eyes produced marked lowering of intraocular pressure. The maximum tension lowering effect (60.15%) was observed 4.6 days after the administration, and the tension recovered 15.8 days after the injection. Perilimbal suction cup studies showed 29.48 % reduction in aqueous flow. It is concluded that Na-K ATPase play an important role in the aqueous formation and that ouabain lowers the intraocular pressure by supressing this enzyme. Intravitreal administration has more powerful tension-lowering effect than intravenous injection.

ABSTRACT

In korean books, letters are arranged either in horizontal lines or in vertical rows. Comparison has been made by the authors regarding the speed of reading in these arrangements. Subjects were divided into the following five groups: primary school pupil, junior and senior high school boy, College student of liberal arts, college student of natural science and middle-aged people. With the chinese letters, the speed of reading was faster when letters are arranged vertically only in high school boy. In others, the speed of reading showed no significant difference regardless of the arrangement of letters. This fact probably be due to the small number of observations and insufficient number of letters.
